The original Gibbons Contractors Ltd civil engineering and precast business was founded by Colin and Dick Gibbons in 1969. In 2007 Gibbons Contractors Ltd, was purchased by the four current directors Ron Williams, Graham Dowd, Mike Harris and Chris Lobb and operated alongside Harris Dowd Construction Ltd, one of Auckland leading specialist concrete and formwork subcontractors , which had been operating since 1998 and was owned by Graham and Mike.

In 2019 the two businesses were brought together and renamed Harris Dowd Gibbons Construction Ltd - HDG

Today we offer services and solutions across a range of areas including:

  • Construction of concrete structures for large buildings, both insitu and precast
  • Civil engineering and infrastructure works contractor specialising in all types of retaining walls, bridges and inground structures
  • Manufacture, supply and install of Gibbons Crib retaining walls

We work closely with our associate company Gibbons Rail Ltd which is a specialist rail infrastructure contractor focusing on foundations, piling, rail platforms and structures, bridges and station works. Gibbons Rail Ltd - GR is owned by the four directors of HDG plus Karl Donovan.

Today we have a combined workforce of over 120 experienced site personnel comprising engineers, site supervisors, carpenters, form workers, excavator operators, drivers, Hi-Rail operators, welders, Thermit welders and general hands and most of our staff have been with us for many years.

We also regularly employ on our projects a further 30 -40 subcontracting personnel, most of whom have worked with us for several years and are well integrated with our site safety and management systems.

We are equipped with our own formwork systems, civil engineering plant, excavators, hirail plant , drilling equipment, welding equipment, trucks, compacting equipment and survey equipment.

Most of our workforce is Site Safe with many being First Aid, Working at Heights, MEWP, WTR, Confined Spaces and CONSTRUCTSAFE certified.

Many of our staff are also KIWIRAIL inducted with rail qualifications and certifications including EAI, Tunnel Awareness and Hi-Rail.

We are a long time Site Safe member, utilise Safe 365 Health & Safety System and we are currently working toward ISO9001, ISO45001 and ISO14001 accreditation.

We are a long time member of Civil Contractors NZ, a member of ISN Networld and were previously ACC WSMP Secondary level

Both companies are based at our office and yard at Albany in Auckland and we also have offices in Auckland city and Tauranga.
