It is just as true for a business like ours. Both Gibbons Rail Limited (GRL) and parentcompany HDG Construction are in fact all about people.
Our people and the people of the organisations that we work for. In GRL’s case that is pretty much KiwiRail who accounts for 90+% of our work.

- A crew of 6 operatives working in the Kaimai Tunnel
- 30 operators with KR Hi-Rail operator qualifications with four of them having experience in tamping, face re-sleepering and spot re-sleepering for KR projects
- 15 qualified Thermit Welders currently working on Auckland Metro and Waikato NIMT lines.
- 50 Tunnel Competent Employees

GRL is 80% owned by HDG Construction and is managed by Karl Donovan (20%) who has 30 years’ experience in the Construction Industry, of which 50 percent as a specialist in Rail sub-contracting.
Rail construction and maintenance is a very specialised area and GRL has a wealth of experience in this area which is recognised by being certified as a “Tier 2 - Rail Specialist Contractor” in: track, civil and structures.

This exemplifies GRL and how we work. With our parent company HDG Construction and the joint full-time team of 90 and a team of 60 odd contractors at any given time through closely aligned and long serving labour hire companies.
The great thing about the HDG/GRL Labour Force is that 80% of the team can work across both businesses and this is why staff loyalty and retention is amongst the absolute best in the Construction Industry. Many of team being with HDG/GRL for 10+ years and some for more than 20 years.
But it goes further than just HDG & GRL as companies. GRL is in partnership with Gleeson Civil Contractors; “Total Rail Solutions”.
Through Total Rail Solutions both companies bring specific expertise in various areas on Rail Construction making them certified as “Tier 1 - Rail Specialist Contractor” in: track, civil and structures, ballast/aggregate supply and waste disposal.
GRL have the share the same core values as their parent company HDG. That is there are two crystal clear principles at the core of both businesses….
HDG will always be “Sub-Contractors” and the “Concrete Construction Specialist.” Making them the; “The Super Sub-Contractors of Concrete Construction.”
Whereas GRL will always be “Sub-Contractors” and the “Rail Construction & Maintenance Specialist.” Making them the; “The Super Sub-Contractors of Rail Construction and Maintenance.”
