Our Story
The original Gibbons Contractors Ltd, a civil engineering and precast business, was founded by Colin and Dick Gibbons in 1969. In 2007, Gibbons Contractors Ltd was acquired by the four current directors: Ron Williams, Graham Dowd, Mike Harris, and Chris Lobb. The company then operated alongside Harris Dowd Construction Ltd, one of Auckland’s leading specialist concrete and formwork subcontractors, which had been established in 1998 and was owned by Graham and Mike.
In 2019, the two businesses were merged and rebranded as Harris Dowd Gibbons Construction Ltd (HDG).

We work closely with our associated company, Gibbons Rail Ltd (GR), a specialist in rail infrastructure contracting, focusing on foundations, piling, rail platforms, structures, bridges, and station works. GR is owned by the four directors of HDG, along with Karl Donovan.
Together, we employ a skilled workforce of over 120 experienced site personnel, including engineers, site supervisors, carpenters, form workers, excavator operators, drivers, Hi-Rail operators, welders, Thermit welders, and general laborers. Many of our staff have been with us for several years, contributing to our reputation for stability and expertise.
In addition, we regularly engage 30-40 subcontracted professionals on our projects. These individuals, who have been working with us for several years, are fully integrated into our site safety protocols and management systems.
We are equipped with a comprehensive range of resources, including our own formwork systems, civil engineering plant, excavators, Hi-Rail equipment, drilling and welding tools, trucks, compacting machinery, and surveying equipment.
Our workforce is highly skilled and extensively trained, with many staff members holding certifications in Site Safe, First Aid, Working at Heights, MEWP, WTR, Confined Spaces, and CONSTRUCTSAFE. Additionally, a significant number of our employees are KIWIRAIL inducted and possess rail-specific qualifications, including EAI, Tunnel Awareness, and Hi-Rail.
